Index of multiple deprivation 2025

In November 2025 an updated version of the index of multiple deprivation was released.

The Index of multiple deprivation are made of the Indices of Deprivation. These measure multiple dimensions of neighbourhood deprivation at a small area level across England.

The 7 individual domains combined to create the Index of Multiple Deprivation are:

  1. Income Deprivation
  2. Employment Deprivation
  3. Education, Skills and Training Deprivation
  4. Health Deprivation and Disability
  5. Crime
  6. Barriers to Housing and Services
  7. Living Environment Deprivation
  • In terms of overall deprivation South Tyneside was ranked 35th of the 296 local authorities in 2025.
  • This puts South Tyneside in the 2nd most deprived decile of local authorities.
  • In 2019 South Tyneside was ranked 26th out of the 319 local authorities, which was within the most deprived decile.

Liver Disease profiles

In November 2025 select indicators were updated as part of the Fingertips Liver Disease profiles

Under 75 mortality rate for liver disease

This indicator shows the Under 75 mortality rate for Males, Females and Persons for 2022/23.

  • For males in South Tyneside this was a rate of 39.3 per 100,000.
  • This was significantly higher than the national rate of 27.3 per 100,000 but is not significantly different to the regional rate of 34.9 per 100,000.
  • For females in South Tyneside this was a rate of 26.5 per 100,000.
  • This was significantly higher than the national rate of 15.2 per 100,000 but is not significantly different to the regional rate of 21.3 per 100,000.
  • For persons in South Tyneside this was a rate of 32.6 per 100,000.
  • This was significantly higher than the national rate of 21.1 per 100,000 but not significantly different to the regional rate of 27.9 per 100,000.
  • A trend could not be calculated for these indicators.

 

Mental health profiles

In November 2025 two new profiles were launched as part of the Fingertips mental health profiles, these were ‘Adult, mental health and wellbeing’ & ‘Perinatal, children and young people’s mental health’.

Included in these new profiles, select indicators have been updated.

New referrals to secondary mental health services

This indicator shows us the rate of new referrals to secondary mental health services per 100,000 population for 2022/23.

  • In South Tyneside this was a rate of 8,912 per 100,000.
  • This was significantly higher than the national rate of 8,117 per 100,000 but was significantly lower than the regional rate of 9,264 per 100,000.
  • The recent trend for this indicator shows no significant change.

Attended contacts with community and outpatient mental health services

This indicator shows the rate of attended non-inpatient contacts with secondary mental health services, per 100,000 population for 2022/23.

Attended contacts have attendance code 5 or 6 indicating the patient attended on time and was seen or attended late but was still seen by the health care professional.

  • In South Tyneside this was a rate of 52,499 per 100,000.
  • This was significantly higher than the national rate of 32,170 per 100,000 and the regional rate of 49,844 per 100,000.
  • The recent trend for this indicator shows it is increasing.

Violent crime – violence offences per 1,000 population

This indicator shows the rate of violence against person offences based on police recorded crime data as a rate per 1,000 population for 2024/25.

  • In South Tyneside this was a rate of 35.9 per 1,000.
  • This was significantly higher than the national rate of 31.4 per 1,000 but not significantly different to the regional rate of 35.6 per 1,000.
  • The recent trend for this indicator shows no significant change.

Loneliness: Percentage of adults who feel lonely often or always

This indicator shows the percentage of adults who responded to the question “How often do you feel lonely?” with “Always or often” for 2022/23-2023/24 as part of the Active Lives Adult Survey.

  • In South Tyneside this was 9.5%
  • This was significantly higher than the national percentage of 7.0% but was not significantly different to the regional percentage of 8.2%.
  • A trend could not be calculated for this indicator.

Child development: percentage of children achieving a good level of development at 2 to 2 and a half years

This indicator shows the percentage of children who received a 2-to-2-and-a-half-year review who were at or above the expected level in all five Ages and Stages Questionnaire 3 (ASQ 3) domains.

  • In South Tyneside this was 73.5%.
  • This was significantly lower than the national percentage of 81.4% and the regional percentage of 84.2%.
  • The recent trend for this indicator shows no significant change.

School pupils with social, emotional and mental health needs

This indicator shows the percentage of school children with Special Education Needs (SEN) who are identified as having social, emotional and mental health as the primary type of need for 2024/25.

  • In South Tyneside this was 5.3%.
  • This was significantly higher than the national percentage of 4.0% and the regional percentage of 4.6%.
  • The recent trend for this indicator shows it is increasing & getting worse.

Obesity, physical activity and nutrition profiles

In November 2025, the obesity, physical activity & nutrition profile was updated with new NCMP data for 2024/25.

Year 6 prevalence of overweight (including obesity)

This indicator shows the prevalence of children aged 10-11 years old who are classified as overweight or living with obesity for 2024/25.

  • In South Tyneside this was 41.1%.
  • This was significantly higher than the national prevalence of 36.2% but was not significantly different to the regional prevalence of 39.1%.
  • The trend for this indicator shows that South Tyneside is decreasing & getting better.

Reception prevalence of overweight (including obesity)

This indicator shows the prevalence of children aged 4-5 years who are classified as overweight or living with obesity for 2024/25.

  • In South Tyneside this was 25.2%.
  • This was not significantly different from the national prevalence of 23.5% or the regional prevalence of 26.7%.
  • The trend for this indicator shows that South Tyneside is decreasing & getting better.

 

 

Year 6 prevalence of obesity (including severe obesity)

This indicator shows the prevalence of children aged 10-11 years who are classified as living with obesity or severe obesity for 2024/25.

  • In South Tyneside this was 27.3%.
  • This was significantly higher than the national prevalence of 22.2% and the regional prevalence of 25.0%.
  • The trend for this indicator shows that South Tyneside is decreasing and getting better.

Reception prevalence of obesity (including severe obesity)

This indicator shows the prevalence of children aged 4-5 years who are classified as living with obesity or severe obesity for 2024/25.

  • In South Tyneside this was 12.2%.
  • This was significantly higher than the national prevalence of 10.5% but wasn’t significantly different from the regional prevalence of 12.4%.
  • The recent trend for this indicator shows no significant change.

Smoking prevalence in adults (aged 18 and over) – current smokers

This indicator shows the prevalence of people aged 18 and over self-reporting as current smokers in the annual population survey for 2024.

  • In South Tyneside this was 14.9%.
  • This was significantly higher than the national prevalence of 10.4% and the regional prevalence of 10.2%.
  • A trend couldn’t be calculated for this indicator.

Smoking prevalence in adults (aged 18 and over) – ex smokers

This indicator shows the prevalence of people aged 18 and over self-reporting as ex-smokers in the annual population survey for 2024.

  • In South Tyneside this was 27.6%.
  • This was not significantly different from the national prevalence of 26.0% or the regional prevalence of 27.5%.
  • A trend could not be calculated for this indicator.

 

 

Smoking prevalence in adults (aged 18 and over) – never smoked

This indicator shows the prevalence of people aged 18 and over self-reporting as having never smoked in the annual population survey for 2024.

  • In South Tyneside this was 57.5%.
  • This is significantly lower than the national prevalence of 63.5% and the regional prevalence of 62.3%.
  • A trend couldn’t be calculated for this indicator.

Smoking prevalence in adults in routine and manual occupations (aged 18 to 64) – current smokers

This indicator shows the prevalence of smoking among persons aged 18-64 years in the routine and manual group for 2022-24.

  • In South Tyneside this was 22.2%.
  • This is not significantly different to the national prevalence of 19.2% or the regional prevalence of 18.2%.
  • A trend could not be calculated for this indicator.

Smoking status at time of delivery

This indicator shows the prevalence of women who are known to be smokers at the time of delivery.

  • In South Tyneside this was 8.6%.
  • This is the lowest prevalence of mothers smoking at time of delivery in South Tyneside on record.
  • This is significantly higher than the national prevalence of 6.1% but not significantly different to the regional prevalence of 7.9%.
  • The trend for this indicator shows that South Tyneside is decreasing and getting better.
