Child and Maternal Health profiles

16–17-year-olds not in education, employment or training (NEET) or whose activity is not known

This indicator shows the proportion of 16 to 17 year olds not in education, employment or training (NEET) or whose activity is not known for 2024/25.

  • In South Tyneside this was 5.6%.
  • This was the same national percentage.
  • This was significantly lower than the regional percentage of 6.8%.
  • The recent trend for this indicator shows no signs of change in South Tyneside.

Children in relative low income families (under 16s)

This indicator looks at the percentage of children (aged under 16 years) living in relative low-income families for 2024/25.

  • In South Tyneside this was 26.5%.
  • This was significantly higher than the national percentage of 19.8% and the regional percentage of 25.1%.
  • A recent trend for this indicator could not be calculated.

Children in care

This indicator looks at children looked after at 31 March (rate per 10,000 population aged under 18 years) for 2024/25.

  • In South Tyneside this was a rate of 97 per 10,000.
  • This was significantly higher than the national rate of 67 per 10,000.
  • This was significantly lower than the regional rate of 111 per 10,000.
  • The recent trend for this indicator shows no signs change in South Tyneside.

Hospital admissions for dental caries (0 to 5 years)

This indicator looks at the finished consultant episodes for dental caries among children aged 0 to 5, rate per 100,000 for 2021/22 – 2023/24.

  • In South Tyneside this was a rate of 320.4 per 100,000.
  • This was significantly higher than national rate of 207.2 per 100,000.
  • This was significantly lower than the regional rate of 443.4 per 100,000.

A&E attendances (under 18 years)

This indicator looks at A&E attendance rate per 1,000 population aged 0-17 years for 2024/25.

  • In South Tyneside this was 762.1 per 1,000 population.
  • This was significantly higher than the national rate of 477.3 per 1,000 and the regional rate of 617.0 per 1,000 population.

Obesity, physical activity and nutrition profiles

In May 2026 new data for 2024 to 2025 from the Active Lives Adult Survey has been added to the Obesity, physical activity and nutrition profile at local authority level.

Percentage of physically active adults (19+ years)

This indicator shows the number of respondents aged 19 and over, with valid responses to questions on physical activity, doing at least 150 moderate intensity equivalent (MIE) minutes physical activity per week in bouts of 10 minutes or more in the previous 28 days expressed as a percentage of the total number of respondents aged 19 and over.

  • For South Tyneside this was 65.4%.
  • This was not significantly different from the national percentage of 68.0% or the regional percentage of 65.7%.

Percentage of physically inactive adults (19+ years)

This indicator shows the number of respondents aged 19 and over, with valid responses to questions on physical activity, doing less than 30 moderate intensity equivalent (MIE) minutes physical activity per week in bouts of 10 minutes or more in the previous 28 days expressed as a percentage of the total number of respondents aged 19 and over.

  • For South Tyneside this was 24.7%.
  • This was significantly higher than the national percentage of 21.8%.

This indicator shows the directly age-standardised mortality rate from respiratory disease, per 100,000 population, for all ages for 2023-25.

  • This was significantly higher than the national rate of 113.2 per 100,000 and the regional rate of 137.5 per 100,000.

Under 75 mortality rate from respiratory disease (3-year range)

This indicator shows the directly age-standardised mortality rate from respiratory disease, per 100,000 population, in those aged under 75 years for 2023-25.

This indicator shows the directly age-standardised mortality rate for all deaths, per 100,000, for all ages.

  • In South Tyneside this was 1,125 per 100,000.
  • This was significantly higher than the national rate of 933 per 100,000 and the regional rate of 1,058 per 100,000.

Mortality rate from cancer, all ages (Persons, 3-year range)

This indicator release shows the directly age-standardised mortality rate from cancer, per 100,000 population, for all ages for 2023-25.

Healthy life expectancy at birth

In May 2026 new data on Healthy life expectancy at birth was updated for 2022-24.

  • In South Tyneside Health Life expectancy at birth for males was 55.9 year, and for females this was 55.8 years. This was a decrease of 0.5 years for males from the previous year and 1.2 years for females.
  • For males this was lower than the national Healthy life expectancy at birth which was 60.9 years. Although it was not significantly different to the regional health life expectancy at birth which was 57 years.
  • For females this was lower than the national Healthy life expectancy at birth which was 61.3 years. Although it was not significantly different to the regional healthy life expectancy at birth which was 56.9 years.

Life expectancy at birth (3-year range)

In May 2026 new data on Life expectancy at birth was updated for 2022-24.

  • In South Tyneside this was 77 years for males and 81.1 years for females. This was an increase for males of 0.2 years for males from the previous year, and an increase of 0.1 years for females.
  • For males this was lower than the national life expectancy at birth which was 79.7 years and the regional life expectancy which was 77.9 years.
  • For females this was lower than the national life expectancy at birth which was 83.5 years and the regional life expectancy which was 81.9 years.
