Sexual & Reproductive Health Profile

In June all Sexually transmitted infection (STI) indicators included in the Fingertips Sexual & Reproductive health profile were updated. Key indicators from this update include:

  • Syphilis diagnostic rate per 100,000
  • Gonorrhoea diagnostic rate per 100,000
  • Chlamydia detection rate per 100,000 aged 15 to 24 years (female)
  • Chlamydia proportion of females aged 15 to 24 years screened
  • New STI diagnoses (excluding chlamydia aged 24 and under) per 100,000

Syphilis diagnostic rate

This indicator release shows the syphilis diagnostic rate per 100,000 population for 2024.

  • In South Tyneside the diagnostic rate was 15.4 per 100,000.
  • This was not significantly different to the national rate of 16.5 per 100,000, or the regional rate of 19.9 per 100,000.
  • Over the past 5 years this indicator has been increasing and getting worse.

Gonorrhoea diagnostic rate

This indicator release shows the gonorrhoea diagnostic rate per 100,000 population for 2024.

  • In South Tyneside the diagnostic rate was 66 per 100,000 population.
  • This is significantly better national rate of 124 per 100,000 and the regional rate of 93 per 100,000.
  • A trend cannot be calculated for this indicator.

Chlamydia detection rate (Female, aged 15 to 24)

This indicator release shows the chlamydia detection rate per in women aged 15 to 24 years old, expressed as a rate per 100,000 population for 2024.

  • In South Tyneside the rate was 1,932 per 100,000 population.
  • This was significantly worse than the national rate of 1,589 per 100,000, but not significantly different to the regional rate of 2,029 per 100,000.
  • There has been no significant change in this indicator over the last 5 years.

Chlamydia proportion of females aged 15 to 24 years screened

This indicator release shows the proportion of chlamydia screening tests reported for women aged 15 to 24 years old for 2024.

  • In South Tyneside the reported proportion was 16.9%.
  • This was significantly worse than the national proportion of 18.0%, as well as the regional proportion of 20.7%.
  • A trend cannot be calculated for this indicator.

New STI diagnoses (excluding chlamydia aged 24 and under)

This indicator release shows the new STI diagnosis rate per 100,000 population for 2024.

  • In South Tyneside there was a rate of 362 per 100,000.
  • This was significantly better than the national rate of 482 per 100,000, but not significantly different to the regional rate of 367 per 100,000.
  • Over the past 5 years this indicator has been increasing and getting worse.
