Adult mental health and wellbeing profile

In July 2026 the following indicators were updated as part of the Fingertips Adult mental health and wellbeing profile:

  • New referrals to secondary mental health services, per 100,000
  • Attended contacts with community and outpatient mental health services, per 100,000
  • Inpatient stays in secondary mental health services, per 100,000

New referrals to secondary mental health services, per 100,000

This indicator shows the rate of new referrals to secondary mental health services per 100,000 population for 2023/24

  • In South Tyneside for all ages, this was a rate of 13,842 per 100,000 population.
  • This was significantly higher than the national rate of 8,602 per 100,000 and the regional rate of 11,182 per 100,000.
  • This was significantly higher than the 2022/23 rate in South Tyneside of 8,912 per 100,000.
  • The trend for this indicator shows to be increasing in South Tyneside based on the most recent 5 data points.

Attended contacts with community and outpatient mental health services, per 100,000

This indicator shows the rate of attended non-inpatient contacts with secondary mental health services, per 100,000 population for 2023/24.

  • In South Tyneside this was 53,868 per 100,000 population.
  • This was significantly higher than the national rate of 34,211 per 100,000 and the regional rate of 48,01 per 100,000.
  • The trend for this indicator shows to be increasing in South Tyneside based on the most recent 5 data points.

Inpatient stays in secondary mental health services, per 100,000

This indicator shows the rate of inpatient stays in secondary mental health services, per 100,000 population for 2023/24.

  • In South Tyneside this was 168 per 100,000 population.
  • This was significantly lower than the national rate of 202 per 100,000.
  • This was not significantly different to the regional rate of 187 per 100,000.
  • The recent trend for this indicator shows no significant change in South Tyneside.

Smoking profile

In July 2026 the following indicators were updated as part of the Fingertips Smoking profile:

  • smoking-attributable mortality
  • smoking-attributable deaths from cancer
  • smoking-attributable deaths from heart disease
  • smoking-attributable deaths from stroke
  • smoking-attributable hospital admissions
  • smoking prevalence in adults (aged 18 and over) – current smokers (APS)

Additionally, the indicator ‘proportion of local smoking population referred to stop smoking services’ was added to the profile.

Smoking Prevalence in adults (aged 18 and over) – current smokers (Annual Population Survey)

This indicator shows the prevalence of smoking among persons 18 years and over for 2024.

  • In South Tyneside this was 14.9%.
  • This was significantly higher than the national percentage of 10.4% and the regional percentage of 10.2%.
  • A recent trend could not be calculated for this indicator.

Smoking-attributable mortality

This indicator shows the deaths attributable to smoking in those aged 35 and over expressed as a rate per 100,000 population for 2022-24.

  • In South Tyneside this was 283.0 per 100,000 population.
  • This was significantly higher than the national rate of 180.7 per 100,000 and the regional rate of 230.6 per 100,000.
  • As this indicator has not been updated since 2017-19, a recent trend could not be calculated for this indicator.

Smoking-attributable deaths from cancer

This indicator shows the cancer deaths attributable to smoking in those aged 35 and over expressed as a rate per 100,000 population for 2022-24.

  • In South Tyneside this was 124.8 per 100,000 population.
  • This was significantly higher than the national rate of 77.0 per 100,000 and the regional rate of 100.2 per 100,000.
  • As this indicator has not been updated since 2017-19, a recent trend could not be calculated for this indicator.

Smoking-attributable deaths from heart disease

This indicator shows the heart disease deaths attributable to smoking in those aged 35 and over expressed as a rate per 100,000 population for 2022-24.

  • In South Tyneside this was 34.5 per 100,000 population.
  • This was significantly higher than the national rate of 26.9 per 100,000 population.
  • This was not significantly different from the regional rate of 31.1 per 100,000 population.

Smoking-attributable deaths from stroke

This indicator shows the stroke deaths attributable to smoking in those aged 35 and over expressed as a rate per 100,000 population for 2022-24.

  • In South Tyneside this was 11.3 per 100,000 population.
  • This was significantly higher than the national rate of 7.0 per 100,000.
  • This was not significant from the regional rate of 7.9 per 100,000.
  • As this indicator has not been updated since 2017-19, a recent trend could not be calculated for this indicator.

Smoking-attributable hospital admissions

This indicator shows the rate of hospital admissions attributable to smoking in those aged 35 and over expressed as a rate per 100,000 population for 2022-24.

  • In South Tyneside this was 2,160 per 100,000 population.
  • This was significantly higher than the national rate of 1,242 per 100,000 and the regional rate of 1,817 per 100,000.
  • As this indicator has not been updated since 2018-20, a recent trend could not be calculated for this indicator.

Proportion of local smoking population referred to stop smoking services

This indicator shows those referred to stop smoking services as a proportion of current smokers, expressed as a percentage for 2024/25.

  • In South Tyneside this was 6.2%.
  • This was not significantly different to the national percentage of 6.4%.
  • This was significantly lower than the regional percentage of 7.9%.
  • As this is the first instance of this indicator, a recent trend could not be calculated.

Perinatal, children and young people’s mental health profile

  • Attended contacts with community and outpatient mental health services (Under 18s), per 100,000

Hospital admissions due to substance misuse (15 to 24 years)

This indicator shows the rate of hospital admission for substance misuse, per 100,000 population aged 15 to 24 years for 2021/22 – 2022/23.

  • In South Tyneside this was 104.2 per 100,000 population.
  • This was significantly higher than the national rate of 47.4 per 100,000 and the regional rate of 70.7 per 100,000.
  • A recent trend could not be calculated for this indicator.

New referrals to secondary mental health services (Under 18s), per 100,000

This indicator shows the rate of new referrals to secondary mental health services, per 100,000 population aged under 18 for 2023/24. It uses new referrals, not individual people. This means that if one person was referred to the service several times, each referral is counted separately.

  • In South Tyneside this was 15,735 per 100,000 population.
  • This is significantly higher than the national rate of 9,818 per 100,000 and the regional rate of 13,475 per 100,000.
  • The trend for this indicator shows to be increasing in South Tyneside based on the most recent 5 data points.

Attended contacts with community and outpatient mental health services (Under 18s), per 100,000

This indicator shows the rate of attended non-inpatient contacts with secondary mental health services, per 100,000 population aged under 18 for 2023/24. It uses appointments or contacts, not individual people. This means that if one person attended the service several times, each attendance is counted separately. As a result, the figure represents the total number of attended contacts rather than the number of children and young people receiving support.

  • In South Tyneside this was 77,351 per 100,000 population.
  • This was statistically higher than the national rate of 35,705 per 100,000 and the regional rate of 60,638 per 100,000.
  • The trend for this indicator shows to be increasing in South Tyneside based on the most recent 5 data points.
