Obesity, physical activity and nutrition profile

In February 2026 a new indicator was added showing the ‘percentage of less active children and young people (age 5 to 16 years)’, showing data from 2017 to 2018 through to 2024 to 2025 for upper and lower tier local authorities, regions and England.

As well a new year of data (2024/25) was added to the indicator ‘percentage of physically active children and young people (age 5 to 16 years)’.

These indicators are included in the Fingertips obesity, physical activity and nutrition profile.

Percentage of less active children and young people (aged 5 to 16 years)

This indicator release shows the percentage of children aged 5 to 16 that do less than an average of 30 minutes of moderate to vigorous intensity activity a day across the week.

  • In South Tyneside this was 31.3%.
  • This was not significantly different to the national percentage of 28.4%.
  • This was not significantly different to the regional percentage of 28.6%.
  • The recent trend for this indicator could not be calculated.

Percentage of physically active children and young people (age 5 to 16 years)

This indictor release shows the percentage of children aged 5 to 16 that meet the UK Chief Medical Officers’ (CMOs’) recommendations for physical activity (an average of at least 60 minutes moderate to vigorous intensity activity per day across the week)

  • In South Tyneside this was 48.2%
  • This was not significantly different to the national percentage of 49.1%.
  • This was not significantly different to the regional percentage of 49.0%.
  • The recent trend for this indicator could not be calculated.

Palliative and End of Life Care Profiles

In February 2026 the following indicators were refreshed and extended with data for 2024 as part of the Fingertips palliative and end of life care profiles.

  • Percentage of deaths in care homes who were temporary care home residents
  • Additionally, indicators looking at the percentage of deaths that occur in hospitals, homes, care homes, hospice and ‘other places’ was updated at Sub-ICB level for 2024. These indicators can be found here.

Percentage of deaths in care homes who were temporary care home residents

This indicator release shows the annual proportion of registered deaths where the place of death is recorded as care home but the care home is not the usual place of residence.

  • In South Tyneside this was 46.6%.
  • This was significantly higher than the national percentage of 41.1%.
  • This was significantly higher than the regional percentage of 38.0%.
  • The recent trend for this indicator shows to be increasing.

Percentage of deaths that occur in hospital, homes, care homes, hospices and ‘other places’

These indicator releases show us the percentage of deaths in hospitals, homes, care homes, hospices and ‘other places’ for 2024 at Sub-ICB level. Whilst this blog looks at these indicators for all ages, this data is available in other age brackets via the link.

  • In South Tyneside 45.1% of deaths occurred in hospital, this is significantly higher than the national percentage of 42.3%.
  • In South Tyneside 28.8% of deaths occurred in homes which is not significantly different to the national percentage of 28.1%.
  • In South Tyneside 22.7% if deaths occurred in care homes which is not significantly different to the national percentage of 21.5%.
  • In South Tyneside 0.9% of deaths occurred in hospice which is significantly lower than the national percentage of 5.5%.
  • In South Tyneside 2.4% of deaths occurred in ‘other places’ which is not significantly different from the national percentage of 2.6%.

Sexual and reproductive health profiles

In February 2026 there was an annual update of the sexual and reproductive health profile indicators for reproductive health and contraceptive prescribing for 2024 and abortion for 2022 & 2023.

Total prescribed Long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) excluding injections rate per 1,000.

This indicator release shows the rate of long-acting reversable contraception (LARC) excluding injections prescribed by GP and Sexual and Reproductive Health Services per 1,000 resident female population aged 15-44 years for 2024.

  • In South Tyneside this was 45.9 per 1,000.
  • This was significantly higher than the national rate of 40.0 per 1,000.
  • This was significantly higher than the regional rate of 36.0 per 1,000.
  • The recent trend for this indicator shows to be increasing.

Percentage of abortions under 10 weeks

This indicator release shows the percentage of all NHS-funded abortions performed under 10 weeks gestation for 2023.

  • In South Tyneside this was 91.0%
  • This was not significantly different to the national percentage of 89.0%.
  • This was significantly higher than the regional percentage of 86.0%.
  • The recent trend for this indicator shows no significant change.

Total abortion rate per 1,000

This indicator release shows the rate of abortions per 1,000 female population aged 15-44 years for 2023.

  • In South Tyneside this was 25.1 per 1,000.
  • This was not significantly different to the national rate of 23.4 per 1,000.
  • This was significantly higher than the regional rate of 22.1 per 1,000.
  • The recent trend for this indicator shows to be increasing.
