Adult mental health and wellbeing profile
In April 2026 the Fingertips Adult mental health and wellbeing profile was updated with the following indicators:
- Model-based estimated prevalence of severe mental illness (New indicator)
- Model-based estimated prevalence of severe mental illness (Other psychosis) (New indicator)
- Depression: QOF incidence – new diagnosis
- Estimated prevalence of opiate and/or crack cocaine use
- The proportion of clients entering alcohol treatment identified as having a mental health treatment need, who were receiving treatment for their mental health
- The proportion of clients entering drug treatment identified as having a mental health treatment need, who were receiving treatment for their mental health
Model-based estimated prevalence of severe mental illness
In April 2026 this indicator was added to the Adult mental health and wellbeing profile. This indicator shows the model-based estimated prevalence of recorded diagnoses of severe mental illness (SMI) and component conditions (bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and other psychosis) in people aged 14 and over.
- In South Tyneside this was a 1.46%.
- The national percentage of 1.16% and the regional percentage of 1.3%.
- As this is the first datapoint for this indicator, statistical significance and data trends cannot be determined.

Depression: QOF Incidence – new diagnosis
This indicator shows us the percentage of patients aged 18 and over with depression recorded on practice disease registers for the first time in the financial year (2024/25).
- In South Tyneside this was 2.1%.
- This was significantly higher than the national percentage of 1.4% and the regional percentage of 1.5%.
- The recent trend for this indicator shows it to be increasing South Tyneside while showing no change nationally.
Estimated prevalence of opiate and/or crack cocaine use
This indicator shows us the estimated prevalence of opiate and/or crack cocaine users aged between 15-64 years. Rate per 1,000 population aged 15-64 for 2022/23.
- In South Tyneside this was 10.5 per 1,000 population.
- This was significantly higher than the national rate of 8.5 per 1,000 population yet significantly lower than the regional rate of 12.8 per 1,000 population.
- A recent trend could not be calculated for this indicator.
The proportion of clients entering alcohol treatment identified as having a mental health treatment need, who were receiving treatment for their mental health
This indicator release shows the proportion of clients entering alcohol treatment identified as having a mental health treatment need, who were receiving treatment for their mental health for 2024/25.
- In South Tyneside this was 91.8%.
- This was significantly higher than the national percentage of 84.0% and the regional percentage of 87.3%.
- The recent trend for this indicator shows no significant change.
The proportion of clients entering drug treatment identified as having a mental health treatment need, who were receiving treatment for their mental health
This indicator release shows the proportion of clients (adults 18+) entering drug treatment in the year identified as having a mental health treatment need, who were receiving treatment for their mental health for 2024/25.
- In South Tyneside this was 78.4%.
- This was not significantly different from the national percentage of 74.7 or the regional percentage of 75.4%.
- The recent trend for this indicator shows to be increasing and getting better.
Newly diagnosed patients with depression who had a review 10-56 days after diagnosis
This indicator release shows the percentage of patients aged 18 or over with a new diagnosis of depression in the financial year 2024/25, who have been reviewed not earlier than 10 days after and not later than 56 days after the date of diagnosis.
- In South Tyneside this was 70.6%.
- This was significantly higher than the national percentage of 64.7% and the regional percentage of 65.0%.
- The recent trend for this indicator shows that South Tyneside is increasing and getting better.
